How high should a wall-mounted coat rack be installed?

The right height depends on who uses it and what is hung from it. Numerical guidelines for an adult, a child, or a narrow entryway.
How high should a wall-mounted coat rack be installed?

Too high, and a child cannot reach it; too low, and long coats drag on the floor. The height of a wall-mounted coat rack is not a matter of taste: it is determined by the length of the clothes hung on it and the height of the people who use it every day. Here are the measurements, the special cases that affect them, and the measuring method that will save you from having to fill in holes.

At what height should a wall-mounted coat rack be installed for an adult?

The standard range is between 160 and 170 centimeters from the floor, measured to the hook itself, not to the top edge of the mounting plate. The distinction may seem minor, but a fifteen-centimeter-high mounting plate shifts the measurement by that same amount. At this height, you can hang up a coat without raising your arm above your shoulder, a gesture repeated several times a day by everyone in a busy entryway.

This range is by no means arbitrary. An adult winter coat measures between 90 and 110 centimeters from the shoulder seam to the hem. Hung on a wall-mounted coat rack installed at 165 centimeters, its bottom ends about 55 to 75 centimeters above the floor: above a baseboard, a low radiator, or a pair of boots placed underneath. Nothing drags, nothing gets dirty.

Dropping it to 150 centimeters changes everything. The same coat then brushes the floor and gets dirty every time the vacuum cleaner passes by. This is the most common mistake with a wall-mounted coat rack, and it is only discovered once the first parka is hung up, the drill bits are put away, and the wall has already been drilled.

The height of a wall-mounted coat rack for a child

For a child, the goal changes completely: it is no longer about optimizing the length of the clothes, but about making the gesture possible without help. Allow between 100 and 110 centimeters for a child aged three to six, and between 110 and 120 centimeters for a child up to ten years old. Beyond that, adult height becomes manageable again, and there is no longer a need to plan a low installation.

The reason is behavioral rather than technical. A child who has to go get a stool will not hang up their coat: they will put it on a chair, and the habit will never be formed. This is the only argument that justifies lowering a wall-mounted coat rack so low, at the expense of the space available under long clothes.

In a bedroom shared by two different age groups, two distinct heights are better than a compromise at 135 centimeters that suits no one. Two stacked bars, or a low wall-mounted coat rack doubled with a high coat hook, solve the problem without taking up any more wall space. Our children's models are designed for this low installation.

Installing a wall-mounted coat rack above a piece of furniture or under a sloped ceiling

Above a console table or entryway furniture, allow at least forty centimeters between the top and the hook. With less than this margin, your hand hits the furniture when hanging up a coat, and the coats get crushed on the top, where they eventually knock over whatever is on it.

Under a mansard ceiling, place the mounting hardware where the clear height is at least 180 centimeters, otherwise the shoulders of the garment will touch the slope and the coat will slip off the hook. In a hallway under the stairs, a low coat hook dedicated to bags is more useful than a poorly placed coat bar.

When the hallway is less than a meter wide, the height ultimately matters less than how far it protrudes. A hook that sticks out twelve centimeters, loaded with a coat, takes up nearly twenty-five centimeters of passage. In this case, opt for wall-mounted coat hooks with a shallow profile or a fold-down hook.

The most reliable method ultimately does not involve any charts. Hang the longest coat in the household on a hanger, hold it against the wall, and mark the position with a pencil so that there is about ten centimeters between the hem and the floor. This height will often differ from the theoretical 165 centimeters, and that is normal: an XL coat does not hang like a mid-season jacket.

Finally, check that the front door opens fully without hitting a hanging garment, and that a light switch or electrical panel remains accessible once the bar is loaded. This is the second most common mistake, and it can only be corrected by filling in the holes.

Installing a wall-mounted coat rack at the right height therefore means starting with the clothes rather than a standard: 160 to 170 centimeters for an adult, 100 to 120 centimeters for a child, forty centimeters of clearance above a piece of furniture, and marking the position with a pencil using the longest coat before drilling.
