Children's coat rack: install it so they can use it by themselves

Installation height, weight capacity per hook, stability and sizes: how to install a children's coat rack they can use without help, from the bedroom to the entryway.
Children's coat rack: install it so they can use it by themselves

A child's coat rack has only one mission: to allow the child to hang up their coat without asking for help. If they have to climb onto a stool or call an adult, the coat ends up on the floor. Three factors make the difference: the installation height, the shape of the hooks, and the overall stability, especially when the child hangs on it.

The right height for a child's coat rack

For a child aged three to six, install the hooks between 100 and 120 centimeters from the floor. At this height, they can hang up their coat by themselves, and it is this repetition that turns the action into a habit. For an adult, the standard height is around 150 centimeters, as explained in our article on the height of a coat hook.

In a family entryway, the easiest solution is to provide two levels. Several freestanding coat racks come with this feature. The round marble base model places its hooks at 90, 130, and 165 centimeters. The steel tree model with a cross base places them at 90, 140, and 170 centimeters. The first level is for children, the next for adults, and then for hats and bulky bags.

A wall-mounted coat rack has the advantage of growing with the child: you simply need to move it higher. To avoid drilling multiple times, mark the future height with a pencil before fixing it, and leave a little room for the following years. Our article on the number of hooks per person also helps to size the whole setup.

Hooks designed for children

The shape of the hook matters more than it does for an adult, because a child is often in a hurry and bumps into things. Our animal-shaped coat hooks are carved from oiled solid wood, with no sharp edges and rounded corners. Each hook supports 2 kg, enough to hold a coat, a school bag, or a bathrobe. The cloud, elephant, and rainbow-shaped coat hooks can also be installed at a child's height.

The load is calculated based on what the child actually hangs up. A full school bag often weighs more than a winter coat. If the school bag is to be hung up every evening, choose a freestanding model with a weighted base or a wall-mounted bar with several hooks, which distributes the weight over several fixings.

The number of hooks depends on the number of children. The preschool wall-mounted coat rack is available with three or five hooks: three are suitable for a family entryway, five for a school, nursery, or a room that several children pass through. The pink freestanding coat rack offers eight, staggered at different heights.

Stability: the one thing not to overlook

A child pulls on a coat rack, sometimes hangs on it, and loads it on one side. On a freestanding model, the base makes all the difference. The pink freestanding coat rack rests on a weighted base, consisting of a plastic cover around a cement core. Our article on the stability of a freestanding coat rack details the other criteria.

Tall furniture requires an extra precaution. As soon as an entryway piece with a bench or shelves exceeds one meter in height, fix it to the wall. The white entryway unit with a storage bench and the white coat rack with a bench and drawers are also delivered with a tip-over prevention device, to be installed during assembly: with children climbing on the seat, it is by no means optional.

For toddlers, a low format changes the use. The wooden freestanding baby coat rack measures 75 cm high, on a 52 × 35 cm base. It fits next to a changing table and remains at the height of a crouching adult, where morning essentials are prepared.

Discover all our children's coat racks, from the wooden animal wall-mounted coat rack to the pink freestanding children's coat rack. For the entryway, the closed white wooden coat rack offers hooks on two levels, for adults and children, and a shoe compartment accessible from age four.

In summary: hooks between 100 and 120 centimeters, rounded edges and a load suitable for a school bag, a weighted base for freestanding models, and wall mounting for any tall piece of furniture. A child who can reach their hook by themselves hangs up their coat without having to be reminded.
